Youth homelessness should matter to everyone, everyday; but one day, Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD), attempts to shine a light on this issue each year. YHMD, started by the National Youth Coalition for Housing (NYCH) in 2006 and held on the 6th of April 2011, is a national campaign that encourages the general public to be part of the solution.
YHMD aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the growing numbers of homeless youth in Australia
  • Build an understanding of the factors contributing to youth homelessness
  • Challenge the perceptions of homelessness and who it affects

We recognise the resilience of these young people and this is the message we need to get out there – the homeless are far from helpless! With good support, young people can move forward and build productive lives. With your voice backing our cause we can maintain and better position youth homelessness as a priority issue on state and federal political agendas.
